It’s always a joy to visit with the children and staff at Transform Asia's David Center Orphanage in Anlong Veng. Our team was in Cambodia for three weeks focusing mainly on water/wastewater projects as well as helping to prepare the David Center Guest House for future visiting teams.
Clean water
Water testing was a priority for the team as well. Samples were taken to test water quality at multiple sites (before and after existing filtration) to access what processes are working well and where improvements to water quality exist. Two water filters (Biosand Filters) were purchased from Water for Cambodia so that they could be placed at each bathroom facility at The David Center so the children and staff would have access to clean water to brush their teeth. Two more water filters were purchased and placed at the Church and Farm property in Anlong Veng. A new water tower was also designed and constructed at the church property so the resident pastor could utilize water from the well.
RainWater Containment
The rainy season brings much needed water. The team looked for ways to further capture and contain rainwater. The Guest House at the David Center has a large roofing system. Gutters and PVC piping were installed to collect and route rainwater to both large rainwater basins and a new trench which flows to the current retaining pond on the property. Two large poly tanks and four cisterns were installed at the worship center and other locations to collect additional water.
REDUCING DEFORESTATION
Last December, we helped facilitate a Biodigester installation at the farm in Anlong Veng. It was exciting to see the Biodigester in full operation. This Biodigester uses animal and human waste to create biogas for cooking and lighting while also producing an odorless rich fertilizer for farming. Prior to this installation, the farm was cutting down trees and purchasing charcoal to create fire for cooking. The rich fertilizer is being used throughout the farm as well as at the David Center Orphanage.
FISH FARMING
Fish farming facilities were observed to gather local Cambodian operations. A location for a fish farm was investigated and later this year the Anlong Veng farm will hopefully be growing fish.
